Reduce Reuse Recycle Rethink

SBU Freethinkers proudly supports Stony Brook University’s mission for sustainability. As such, we are taking measures to operate a more sustainable organization, while continuing to reach out to all freethinking students across campus.

Meetings and Events

  • We are rethinking our meeting locations by periodically holding outdoor meetings to avoid using electricity and other resources that a room requires. This also makes less clean-up work, which means that no harmful cleaning chemicals will have to be used as a result of these meetings.
  • When we promise free food, we will encourage members to bring their own mugs, plates and silverware to reduce paper and plastic waste. This will also encourage reuse of plates and utensils.
  • Meetings are organized exclusively online to eliminate paper waste in notifying members of meetings. We use our website, forum, blog, Facebook group, Google group, and email list before ever printing a page.

Posters

  • We only print posters on cheap white recyclable paper. Using colored (mixed) paper is more harmful to the environment in both manufacturing and disposal. We also only use black laser-jet ink (as opposed to color ink) which is much more environmentally friendly to remove from the paper when recycling.
  • We print as many posters as we can fit on one sheet (2-3) to reduce paper consumption.
  • We are rethinking the printing process by printing by printing multiple different posters in one document (all in the same job) to reduce the number of receipts printed. This enables us to have a wide variety of messages to cut down on repetition and waste.
  • We don’t "tile" posters. We increase visibility with large type and thought provoking messages.
  • We require members to reuse our posters, and remind anyone who takes down our posters to RECYCLE them too.

Print and Spread our memes

To download and print the files, you must be a member that has attended a meeting recently, and you must agree to abide by our sustainability policy:

By printing and spreading posters, I agree to abide by the SBU Freethinkers sustainability policy as stated above.

That means:

  • DO NOT "Tile" posters
  • Think before you print, and print efficiently
  • Only print on white paper
  • DO NOT remove other group's posters unless you are in the SAC or the Union and the poster either has no dated stamp, or the poster has expired. The stamp is ONLY for the SAC and the Union.
  • DO get a stamp on 6 posters from the information desk in the SAC and the Union (6 posters for each).
  • Use descretion about where you post, and remember your target audience.

I also promise to recycle posters that have been removed, and clean up the campus in general.
